Backup size since upgrade to 7.1

Our NE backups would normally consume about 1.6TB under 5x, however since the upgrade to 7.1x, this has gone up to over 2.5TB

Anyone with an idea as to why this would be happening? There's nothing obviously wrong (ie nothing on temp, nor old backups not being deleted).

This is happening on both systems we upgraded.

maybe before yo uwere compressing backups with the -z command and the upgrade cleared that?
