The zimlet also works for:
8.0.0_GA_5434.FOSS (thanks to troublemaker for testing)
To be complete I added the zimlet from version 8 (from zcs-NETWORK-8.0.0_GA_5434.UBUNTU12_64.20120907144808).

How to:

1. download the zip file for your version.
   for Zimbra 8: rename the zip file to read com_zimbra_viewmail.zip
2. deploy the zimlet in your Zimbra admin console
3. log out and back in to the console: the view mail button should be there.

Others are having luck; any hints what might be broken here?

Adter a quick look into the files, it looks like the description is supposed to be filled in by some JavaScript using the included com_zimbra_viewmail_LAN.properties files (where LAN is your language).
I know there is a language bug in version 8. I suggest setting your admin console language to English and try the zimlet again.

Hm. My language is already set to "English (United States)" ( == en_US). I tried just "English" ( == en). No change, same error on deploy.

Language setting shouldn't have any effect on the ability to unzip the file @ conosle ...

Hm, in that case I don't know.
Did you download the file correctly? Sha1sum is 4ecb2baf237941c873739dbcae7691afb359727c.

As a dirty workaround you can change
description="${msg.description}"
to
description="description"
in file com_zimbra_viewmail.xml.

Untested, I have no Zimbra 8 installation.

bingo.

wget of the file from the DL link was pulling a 22K file, but the sha1sum's wrong!

click-to-dl gets a 9.8K file that has the right sha1sum. deploying THAT .zip works -- no errors on deploy.

unfortunately ViewMail still does not work, failing as per bug in: https://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=78136 ... but that's a different matter, now.
