Default conversation with 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] timed out while sending RCPT TO

    Hello.

I have found lot's of threads similiar to this but any of them haven't been resolved. We are having a problem where emails are randomly deferred (by timed out to localhost). Most of the emails goes without any problem. Since it says "relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:10024", I think this have something to do with Amavis? If so, how I can get more information about what is wrong? I found out that amavisd logs to /var/log/zimbra.log, however there isn't any more information about this. Is there way to increase logging level?

We are running Release 7.1.4_GA_2555.UBUNTU10_64 UBUNTU10_64 FOSS edition, Patch 7.1.4_P1. We have 4 MTA servers, mx1, mx2, smtp1, smtp2. We have only 1 webinterface running which has also ldap server.

    Code:
    Mar 26 16:46:42 [smtp2 ip] postfix/smtp[9725]: E872044129: to=<email>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:10024, delay=986, delays=686/0.01/0/300, dsn=4.4.2, status=deferred (conversation with 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] timed out while sending RCPT TO)
Flushing mailqueue from webinterface mostly helps, deferred mails are delivered.

    EDIT:
I changed IPs and domain name.

    Code:
    zimbra@smtp2:~$ dig example.net mx

According to the output you've provided there's no A record for your server and the hosts file is incorrect. Go to the Split DNS wiki article and read details on how to configure your DNS A & MX records and the hosts file

Thank you for your answer. I added "localhost.localdomain" part to etc/hosts files. I doublechecked that I had the A and MX records in DNS, I'm not sure why they didn't appear on the output.

Mails are delivered and being received, however some of them are stuck in queue and will be delivered/received when I flush queue. We are not behind NAT, all servers have public IP.

    Code:
    root@smtp1:/opt/zimbra/log# nslookup smtp2.example.net
    Server:1.1.1.1
    Address:1.1.1.1#53

    Name:smtp2.example.net
    Address: 4.4.4.4

It's almost impossible to read the information you've posted above with all the spacing removed and in 'QUOTE' tags rather than 'CODE' tags - please use those for all terminal output you paste here.

It also doesn't serve any useful purpose to change all the IP addresses, go to the Split DNS article and post the output from all the commands in the 'Verify....' section of that article and fix your hosts file as I mentioned earlier. You haven't mentioned if you're behind a NAT router (or firewall) but even if you're not you should still run those commands.
    Regards

Thanks for your answer again. I really didn't understand fully your post, as far as I can see I used CODE tags. Spacing got removed at copy paste, I'm sorry. I apologize for bad post, I'll try to make things more clearer.

We are NOT behind a NAT.

    INCOMING EMAIL SCENARIO

Email sent from outside (gmail) to address seppo@ihalainen.fi. MX records for @ihalainen.fi: should be correct:

    Code:
    > set type=mx
    > ihalainen.fi
    Server: resolver2.dnaip.fi
    Address: 62.241.198.246

    Non-authoritative answer:
    ihalainen.fi MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = mx2.mailhop.org
    ihalainen.fi MX preference = 0, mail exchanger = mx2.ficolo.net
    ihalainen.fi MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx10.tdc.fi
    ihalainen.fi MX preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx11.tdc.fi
    ihalainen.fi MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = ihalainen.fi
Means primarily mails are sent to mx2.ficolo.net. mx2.ficolo.net is Zimbra MTA. A Records and Reverse records for mx2.ficolo.net should be ok:

    Code:
    > set type=any
    > mx2.ficolo.net
    Server: resolver2.dnaip.fi
    Address: 62.241.198.246

    Non-authoritative answer:
    mx2.ficolo.net internet address = 164.215.32.69
    Code:
    > 164.215.32.69
    Server: resolver2.dnaip.fi
    Address: 62.241.198.246

    Name: mx2.ficolo.net
    Address: 164.215.32.69
    Host file should be correct:

    Code:
    seppo@mx2:~$ sudo cat /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
    164.215.32.69 mx2.ficolo.net mx2
Please note that the domain @ficolo.net is not used for email domain in this server. Domain forwarding for all emails for @ihalainen.fi coming to mx2 is set to host mx.ihalainen.fi.

Most of the emails are delivered normally (immediately), only few emails are queued due to time out error. Those will be queued from minutes to hours and can be delivered using flush button.

    OUTGOING EMAIL SCENARIO

Example: Internal UPS device sends report email to noc@ficolo.com (external email server - BPOS). UPS connects to smtp1.ficolo.net (relay allowed from UPS's network). Most of the emails are delivered to correctly and immediately to the receiver’s box at external email server. Only some of the emails are queued due to time out same time out error (Flush helps again). Emails could be queued due the time out error in hours if not noticed and flushed.

All A, MX and Reverse records are as described and most of mail deliveries are working correctly. I attached you a screenshot from the mail que.

I think I gave you all relevant information. However, if I still missed something please say so. I would really like to solve this issue since it's little tiresome.

Still getting mail deferred.. I found ldap errors at zimbra.log

    Code:
     Apr 5 14:42:56 164.215.32.68 amavis[24345]: (24345-02)
                  (!)lookup_ldap: timed out at (eval 112) line 144, <GEN31> line 5.
This occurs on all MTA servers. Any ideas why it gives timed out errors sometimes? Since it's amavis logging, I think it's relevant to my main problem. I made another zimbra server with only zimbra-ldap and made it replicate master ldap server. I updated mx1 and smtp1 servers to query replica ldap server but that didn't help.. Not sure if I did it right, I left ldap_master_url to ldap master and changed ldap_host to replica server and booted servers with zmcontrol restart.

Should I try local ldap replicaservers? Maybe installing ldap on all MTA servers helps.
