Default New MX for existing domain

I'm migrating from an old Zimbra 5 server to new servers. There are several active email domains on the old server and I plan to migrate these domains in stages and to different servers.

Can I change the MX settings for, say, example1.com on the OLD server to point to the NEW1 server? So that users from example2.com domains can send email to the NEW1 server from the OLD server.

Why wouldn't you be able to do that?

What if you do not remove example.com from the OLD server - ie. config details still in the zimbra config db - external email with be directed accord to the external MX record.

However, does the mail system check the MX records when it sends an email from jane@example2.com to bob@example.com? Or does it go by the records in the zimbra config db?

That wasn't your original question or scenario, was it? If you provide half the information you'll get half an answer.

Of course ZCS does a DNS lookup to deliver mail. What's the point of maintaining the domain on the old server if you're moving it to a new machine and location?

Sometimes half the problem is know the right question to ask.

    1. DNS MX transition timing.
    2. Email migration: 50Gb of mail to migrate, over an occasional 10Mb pipe - half of this is old users/archived, so will go last and might miss the MX roll over.
    3. Failback option - very painful if this needs to happen.

If you maintain the domain on the original server then mail will go to that from any of the other domains if the MX records still point to that server, if the MX records point to another server then they will be delivered to that server. You will end up with a situation wherby mail gets sent to your original server while you're doing a move of accounts and you could end up with a situation where there's mail still left on the 'old' server that hasn't been moved. You could use a Split Domain (it's a wiki article) if you need a longer period to move all the accounts.

You really do need to update your forum profile so we know which version and release of ZCS you're using.
    Regards
