Default Help with Domain & DNS setup

Hi,

I've been trying to install and setup Zimbra 7.1 on a VPS (Not ideal I know, but it's just for a few users.) I followed this guide together with the "Quick Start Installation Guide" for 7.1.
I got it installed successfully and it seems to run surprisingly well, however I'm left with a setup that means my email address would be: user@mail.mydomain.com rather than user@mydomain.com which is what I want. Now this is where I get lost as I'm not sure how to "fix" this with my proposed setup, which I'll try and detail next:

I currently have one VPS server to host a website, run a few small gaming servers and other applications (which I'll refer to as "Server1".) I also have one domain (which I'll refer to as mydomain.com) which points to that VPS.

But to throw a spanner in the works; I have been using Google Apps for mail up till now but I now want to try to use Zimbra hosted on another separate VPS instead (which I'll refer to as "Server2"), and I want to use Zimbra with mydomain.com without it impeding on the present requests to Server1.

I have tried searching these forums and did some Google searches for some guidance however, unfortunately I couldn't find anything that was relevant or clear enough to help me.

I know my query is probably not entirely within the scope of this forum but I'd greatly appreciate any help or advise, as you can probably tell I'm very much a novice when it comes to this stuff, so I'm sorry about that.

Thanks.

PS. I'm running ZCS Open Source Edition 7.1.4 GA Release on Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS 64Bit

This 'problem' has been covered in the forums many times, you basically have two choices. You can uninstall ZCS with the following command "./install.sh -u" and that will remove the complete /opt/zimbra directory structure including any mail you've received. When you've done that you should reinstall ZCS and when you get to the point where you're asked if you want to modify the domain name you answer "yes" and set the domain to "mydomain.com".

The second choice is to rename the domain (details in the wiki & forums) to your required domain name. I'd recommend you do a new install as described above.

Thanks that helped a lot, I must of been searching for the wrong things when I was trying to find the solution(s) to the problem.

Anyway, I followed your advise, did a new install of ZCS, modified the domain name during install and it seems to have solved my problem.

Thanks again!

Aliasing also works just fine for user@mail.example.com to user@example.com

You're far better setting it correctly during the initial install or renaming the domain.
