As a newbee to all this stuff I have to ask you pros wether my idea is totaly crazy or wether it might be possible to achive.

I don't actually want zimbra to be my mailsever. I "just" want it to be my mailbox server.
Let me explain: I've got email accounts on 2 different mailservers, which are out of my administrative juristiction. But I want to have my emails on a central server in order to access them from different clients/workstations (PC, laptop, mobile). But I still want to be able to send an email using my usual mailaccounts.
So I guess I want zimbra to relay emails I want to send to the actual mailservers as well as receive emails from my actual mailservers and put them into my centralized mailbox.

I hope I described sufficiently..

You can certainly do that but why not just use Zimbra Desktop on your client PCs? It means you don't have the expense, hassle and necessary maintenance of running a server 24/7 just to collect your email.

But how can zimbra desktop use the same - for lack of a better word - pst file without a server? I mean: I want to have all infos at every client: email (in and outgoing), calendar entries, contacts, etc.

It would have a server, you've already said you have accounts on two mail servers - you connect to those server to get your mail.

They would synchronise with your current mail server and therefore up-to-date, you would need the client on each PC (as I mentioned above). Feel free to use ZCS if you want, I'm just trying to offer you a more simple method of managing your email.

my current email servers don't provide for calendars and contact saving. plus usually sent email are only saved on the client from which the mail was sent.

running the server is not a problem. I got more than one server running.

can you please point to how I can do relaying. and is it possible to do the following: let's assume that zimbra runs in a domain called zimbradomain.com and one of my mail accounts is at mydomain.com. As I got it, I need to have an account at zimbradomain.com in order to be able to use the mailbox server. Is it possible to send an email via my zimbra server and have the email get to the receiver with the sender adress mydomain.com.
and can I have zimbra receive emails from mydomain.com and put them into my mailbox with my zimbra user at zimbradomain.com ?

gosh this sounds all so complicated. hope I made myself clear...

The answer to that would be a feature called "Persona", take a look at the documentation and have a search of the forums to see what you need to do for that (it is fairly straightforward).

You can either use and external tool called "fetchmail" (have a search of the forums and wiki for details) to get the mail from your external servers or your email account on the Zimbra server has the facility to download the mail from as many external accounts as you like and drop the mail into your Inbox or separate folders.

I was able to include one of my mail accounts now, the one that is at my private ISP.
