Default enable instant messagin 7.1.2

I ve looked through the COS and i can not see where to enable IM for one of my zimbra OS server. On the 2nd server chat is enabled so it looks like the feature is available but i cant find where the setting can be applied. Anyone have any pointers to get me in the right direction?

Thanks

You do realise that the IM function is deprecated, don't you? It will not be available as an IM server in future versions of zimbra from ZCS 8.x onwards, if you really want to enable it then there are several threads in the forums that have details on how to do that - although I must point out that the Release Notes state that it's beta quality and should not be enabled on a production server. My advice would be to choose another solution before you actually need to do it, there are also a couple of threads that cover the 'removal' of IM from Zimbra and point to the bug report on what will most likely happen in the future.

Hi Phoenix,

Thanks for the quick reply. The server i have without IM was a new install and the other server was upgraded so it makes sense that its missing. Its only one user that asked about it so not a big deal at the moment. I saw some thread about alternate solutions so i will try out a few on a test server and see what works best for my situation.

But what are the alternative ways?

Zimbra does not have any server to communicate - such as MS Lynx, and Cisco WebEx.

IM (xmpp) in Zimbra 7.1 works well, although it isn't good tool for professional communication.
I added for my users external spark client (with zimbra Xmpp) for text multiple conversation mode (group chat).

Video communications today is becoming a standard in Collaboration tools...

Does anyone know what VMware planning to transport audio / video for Zimbra?

I confirmed only one bug in the Zimbra 7.1.2 IM:

We can't start a conversation mode with Navi Menu: New (create) - > Chat (find user), when we use a external Ldap auth.

This is the bug: https://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=64680

If I am updating from 6 > 7 will the IM data remain ? eg friends list

And will I need to enable IM even though it's enabled in 6 ?

Unless there's a secret plan to replace IM with something better I think removing it from 8 is a ridiculous idea - why reduce functionality when XMPP is working so well ?

Crazy

I'd suggest you read the threads on this topic and the relevant bug reports. This has been mentioned in the Release Notes for a while and as I mentioned above, it is considered Beta quality and should not be enabled on a production server - if you get problems you're on your own, there will be no fixes for it.

You don't have to do update to Version 8. Perhaps something will be lost, as in version 7 - convertd.

That's correct if you don't want any additional features or bug fixes.

What do you mean by that statement? There has been nothing 'lost' in ZCS 7 and convertd is still there in the NE version as it always has been.

@phoenix

works fine here

@sangamc

We're right on the verge of buying a pro licence and this could very well make us decide to go perpetual which means less income generated by Zimbra for VMWare.

If we're thinking that we can't be the only ones.

convertd isn't a deal breaker it's more eye candy - IM is far more useful, at least to us
