Clean up Zimbra folder.

I have been looking in my Zimbra folder and noticing a lot of folder for various software exists in several version and want to know if it is possible to remove all but the latest version of these folders.

Below you can see some of the folders i'm talking about.

curl -> /opt/zimbra/curl-7.21.4
curl-7.21.3
curl-7.21.4

cyrus-sasl -> /opt/zimbra/cyrus-sasl-2.1.23.3z
cyrus-sasl-2.1.22.3z
cyrus-sasl-2.1.23.3z

java -> /opt/zimbra/jdk1.6.0_25
jdk1.5.0_15
jdk1.5.0_17
jdk1.5.0_19
jdk1.6.0_04
jdk1.6.0_16
jdk1.6.0_21
jdk1.6.0_22
jdk1.6.0_24
jdk1.6.0_25

It looks like it should be okay since the main folder without version number is pointing to the one in use, but want to be sure before actually doing it.

We do remove those old versions periodically, but they cause no harm being there and do not use a lot of disk space.

The first time we did that a few years ago we were all very nervous so we just copied them elsewhere on the server when Zimbra was shutdown. Zimbra started up OK, threw no errors over the next week so then we deleted the old directories.

But to be fair, we haven't cleaned any directories up like that for about a year now. And we find SLES (our favorite Linux distro) often leaves more unneeded files in /var/adm and /var/cache/zypp than those unused directories in Zimbra.

I agree it would be nice if Zimbra pruned its own no-longer-needed directories, and I seem to recall posting something to that effect here a few years ago. But it's a cosmetic issue at the end of the day and I'd rather see the Zimbra developers spend time squashing bugs.

My Zimbra folder measures around 6.2GB in size with obsolete software in total counting in at around 370MB and a lot of statistics files to which measured in at 1.5GB(Needs major cleanup).

Every KB counts when backup is done to maximize downtime since you cannot have the OSE version online at some stages during backup.

Agree that the devs should focus on making the Zimbra better, but sometimes simple "housecleaning" how-to's will make the life of an everyday non business administrator happy. :-)

Have you considered two backup jobs to minimize your downtime?

One job would run when Zimbra is shut down, to backup those directories in the OSE that can only safely be backed up when Zimbra is not running (e.g. /opt/zimbra/store, all the indexes and the MySQL database).

The second job could run at any time, and would backup everything else. /opt/zimbra/libexec for example doesn't change when Zimbra is running.
