Since the OSE version doesn't support Outlook natively, you'd have to connect with either POP3 or IMAP. And, the only limitation would be your server hardware.

The payed version would be able to support outlook? and if yes, is the limitation dependent on the server hardware aswell?

Yes, and also depends on how many licenses you purchase.

AND server hardware (and/or number of servers, etc).

Even with a zillion paid licenses, you won't be able to support this amount of users on a single C2D with 2 GB of RAM 8)

When you purchase the NE edition, you purchase by the number of seats. We purchased a 250 seat license, so it will support up to 250 outlook clients via the Outlook connector.
