Default Changing default 'from' address

Hello,

instead of the username, I would like to use an alias address as the default 'from' address for my users.

Note that I don't want to select from my alias addresses as asked for in bug 5862, but simply to use a different default.

I tried to change the reply-to address in the user's mailbox settings, but that didn't do it. (Can someone explain to me, what this reply-to address is used for? The Documentation is not very specific about it.)

I could change the 'from' address by using the zmprov tool
as stated in Changing domains and username .

But is there a better way to do it?

Kai

That's the address an email gets sent to when someone hits the 'reply' on their client.

Better in what sense? Using zmprov is the way to do it, don't forget the warning in that thread about other MTAs maybe rejecting the mail.

I just thought that there would be perhaps a way to do this via the users gui. I expected this to be a common requirement for the user to be able to choose a default alias to send from.

Mind you, when I speak of alias, I do not mean a completely different email address, but simply one of the aliases configured for the user. E.g. our user names come from an external ldap and are not necessarily what you would like to see as a sender address.

But if there is no way for the user to set this I might add an enhancement request.

OK, if you mean an alias then I think there's already an enhancement request in bugzilla, have a search and add your vote to it. For now, the zmprov command is the only way to do it.

I did a thorough search on the keywords I could think of an could not find a similar request, so I will add an enhancement request.

It was added as bug# 11245.

As I wrote in my initial post: I want to be able to choose a default from address which is used for all my mails. IMHO, the request 5862 asks for the user to be able to select from his mail addresses for every email.
