Tons of left over files in defer folder

I've been looking at my zimbra backups, (I zmcontrol stop and rsync /opt/zimbra) and I noticed that I have thousands of files (most with old dates) in the /opt/zimbra/data/postfix/defer folder.

When I look at deferred mail in the gui zimbra admin web page, I see only 5 deferred emails waiting, but in the /opt/zimbra/data/postfix/defer folder, there are thousands of files.

I've done "postsuper -d ALL deferred" and "postsuper -p ALL deferred but it makes no difference.

Is there a "correct" way to purge these files? They really cause the backups to consume a bunch of "extra" space. What would happen if I just stop postfix and delete these files (not the folders -- there are folders named 0-F which contain all these files...)?

The 5 deferred emails listed in zimbraAdmin do appear to be in one of the folders under defer, and I can temporarily move these to the hold queue...

PS. I upgraded to 6.0.12 from 6.0.9 last week, most of these files are from way before then...

When you are logged into the machine as the zimbra user, and run "mailq", do you see any of the id's in the output?

no, just the 5 that show up in zimbraAdmin.

I think I should be OK if I kill 'em, as long as I leave the folders untouched, but I was just trying to get some advice first

If they're not showing up with a mailq (which is the same thing zimbraAdmin does), and they're that old, I'd also concur that they are okay to delete. Seems that postfix isn't even aware of them.
