Using Distribution Lists

Is there a trick to using Dist Lists? I've created one and populated it with users but, when I try to send a message to the list, no users in the list receive mail! This looks like a simple, straight forward procedure but I'm having no luck. Also, is there a faster way of setting up Dist Lists besides the find - select - add to list technique? Thank you!
