all mail deferred due to amavis failure

suddenly my ZCS OSE won't send mail due to amavis failures... connection refuses errors. I have tried using zmcontrol stop and then zmcontrol start to no avail. I am not using the built in a/v or antispam so i'm at a loss as to why this is suddenly happening.

I wound up having to enable a/v and then bounce the whole box for things to work correctly.
