Migration Planning - Best way to recreate accounts ?

Hi,

I am testing the migration process to move from ZCS 6 to ZCS 7

I have successfully used ZMZTOZMIG to copy my mailbox content over to the new server - so I understand that part.

What I cannot find anywhere is the procedure to export all my users from my existing server. There seems to be lots of info on migration from other mail servers - but I can't find the information to this for zimbra to zimbra.

From my observations so far, it seems that

1. There is no easy way to export all accounts.
2. even with the accounts set up on the new server, and shares that were made will need to be re-shared after the migration (unless that export will also export the zimbra IDs

If answers, or additional observations I would love to hear them.

Why not just move to the same version of Zimbra on the new server then do an upgrade to ZCS 7?

Wasn't sure if there would be any "baggage" brought over that might cause unexpected problems down the line.

Steps to do it your way ...
1. Install 6.0.10 (I'm currently using)
2. Copy /opt/zimbra from old server to new
3. Run upgrade install to 6.0.10 with -s option ???
4. Test
5. Run upgrade to 7.0.x

Is that correct ?

Am I correct in assuming doing it this way, I would have to assign the same hostname and IP Address to the replacement machine as my server currently has ? So after copying over the /opt/zimbra, I would have to remove the old server from the network, and reconfigure the network settings of the new server before starting up zimbra ?

That shouldn't really be a problem with the exception of the IM server, it's being removed from Zimbra in the next major release. If you have it enabled in 6.x then it will be enabled during an upgrade to 7.x. I'd suggest you disable it on the new server if it's not in use.

Yes, that's correct but I'd add of a step 2a) run zmfixperms to make sure everything is OK.

Yes, that's also correct. I'd recommend keeping the same IP address to save any unforeseen problems (it does happen occasionally) and also the DNS records need to be pointed to the new server.

Is this going to be a migration for a live server or just a test?

Just doing a trial migration right now - waiting for 7.0.1 before attempting the real migration.

I'd rather do a rsync (as root, it syncs the permissions too) than "copy" (steps 2 and 2a) 8)

Also double check your zimbra user as the same UID on both servers.

Thanks for the rsync hint. I did actually mean an rsync - I should have said that in the first place.

If using the rsync method will they not be the same by definition ?
