Default High Availability with ZCS OPensource

Hi Gurus,

I am planning to install ZCS opensource in two similar servers.

I wanted to configure high availability using some opensource software like heartbeat between these two servers with one virtual IP configured (so that the server is accessible with this virtual IP) for two.

Will this work properly as a complete failover..that is if the services are down in one server will another become accessible.

Have anybody had done such setup. Please help me to achieve this.

thanks
Geetha

Search the forums for the 'word' "DRBD".

There is only one storage and it is configured as NAS.

The same filesystem say Zimbra may be mounted to both the servers. All the installation of Zimbra, and all necessary things will be installed in this area.

Is DRBD possible with this setup.

How to establish HA in this situation.

pls calrify

You could have HA setup as you described but you will have an issue with the storage component. You'll have active-standby situation where you will use half of the hardware.
From my experience DRBD is not good for havy loaded systems.
You could also take a look for the starage option here: VMWare Zimbra

Hi

Please suggest the best solution. I want to have high availability at any cost and there are around 1000 mail boxes - around 800 GB in the existing mail system. I have to migrate now to ZCS open source.

Planning to have two LUNs in the storage-SAN (EMC) and mount one LUN to server-1 and another LUN to server-2. Have to install ZCS in the two servers and implemet HA and DRBD.

Is it fine. WIll this create any problem or slowness, pls also give the link of good document on the same.

ZCS NE + vmware HA + several nodes + SAN.

You already have a (not cheap) EMC SAN but are using the free version of ZCS...
Sounds like something is not correct here...

What is the Current MailServer ..? You have mentioned that u need to Migrate to ZCS..The DRBD Would Provide for HA , But backup & compliance issues may come up with Open Source.Document the limitations . Plan it well & then initiate Implementaiton

thanks for your reply. As you said we have an EMC storage..Presently we use a mailsystem called Mithi Connect server which is a locally available software. Its also collab suite.. I have tested migrating few users with imapsync. Migration from Mithi to ZCS is fine. But now the problem is we cant afford to licensed ZCS and hence presently atleast we have to go for opensource ZCS.
I want to install opensource in 2 servers and install HA also.
1)
My confusion is whether to have a single SAN LUN and mount to the two servers and RUN only HA without DRBD

or
2)
Make two SAN LUNS and mount to 2 servers and run HA and DRBD..

The OS what will be used is CENTOS.

Please suggest the good solution with this limitation.
It will be very helpful for me.

thanks and regds

Hi all,

I checked /opt/zimbra mounted in NFS as a common mount point and tried implementing HA. When I abruptly shutdown a system ( process of checking HA) Zimbra was not starting from the other. OPenldap was giving errors.

But in live I will be using SAN mount point and not NFS. I am unbale to do the same testing with SAN as we dont have now.

Will common mount point in SAN also creates problem ...Please suggest..I ma waiting for forums reply to proceed the implementation.

Please help.

thanks
Geetha

What kind of ldap error are you getting?

Common mount point, or more common called shared storage (NAS/SAN) do not protect your from data corruption. DRBD is same situation. You still need a backup plan.

If you yank the power cord, equivalent to hardware failure, then databse is not shutdown properly. Mysql usually should be able to auto recover, openldap maybe a bit different.

Also how is your HA configured?
