Default Migration from older Open Source Zimbra Editions

Hi

I'm running currently a single Zimbra Open Source Edition Server:

[zimbra@zbr opt]$ zmcontrol -v
Release 6.0.5_GA_2213.RHEL5_64_20100203001950 CentOS5_64 FOSS edition.

I need to migrate this server to the newest Zimbra Network Edition (the new zimbra installation will be on another server not on the same hardware...)

I've read the Wiki entry about Migration at Network Edition Moving from Open Source to Network Edition ZCS - Zimbra :: Wiki

Quote:
Important: The ZCS release version number you install on the network edition server must be the same release as installed on the open source edition server.
Since the new Network Edition Server will be version 7 and the my current Zimbra Version is 6.x, how do i make a proper migration of the data and users? Is this supported at all?

greeting

You follow the instructions in the wiki article.

You mean changing versions? No, it's not supported and you must install the same version on the new server as you have on the old server - the wiki article is explicit in that regard.

Thanks for fast answer.

So basically it's not supported to migrate from Version 6 Opensource to Version 7 Network Edition. Regarding your experience: Are there no chances that it will work when i will follow the steps in wiki (because of the version difference) or is it just "not supported" in sense of getting official support.

I mean the data migration of files within the filesystem may not be a problem, but i'm thinking about the metadata config in mysql/ldap (ex. because potential mysql db layout changes from version 6 to version 7 or similar stuff)...

greetings

What you need to do is either: a) upgrade the current server to a specific version then migrate it to a new server or b) move the current version to a new server then upgrade that to the new version - take your pick. Whatever you do the versions must be the same on both servers when you do the move to the new server. The documentation is certified to work, do not try anything esle or you'll have problems. You should also take adequate backups of the OSS version before and after any upgrade/move and read the Release Notes in detail and search the forums for any problems that may have been reported here.

So i've done a Testmigration and this worked so far well:

1) I've rsync'ed from the current zimbra server (open source version 6.0) the /opt/zimbra directory to a testserver (same Os, same hostname) where i've installed the same zimbra 6.0 Opensource version. (Moving ZCS to New Server - Zimbra :: Wiki).

After the rsync the "zmcontrol start" on the testserver failed. I had to run a ldap recover (ldap id2entry.bdb has bad LSN) after that it started

2) Then i've upgraded on the testserver to Network edition 7.0 (simply runned install.sh).

Looks ok. Data is present and the important things seem to work on first sight.

So it worked for me so far pretty well

thanks
