maybe.. Spark?
maybe.. Spark?
Thanks, I'm looking at Spark, but it's Java, which makes it not so lightweight for a client app... The ZCS IM is fine, except that it won't connect to an external XMPP server, and it requires the user to be running ZCS client. We really would like a systray app.
Release 7.1.4_GA_2555.UBUNTU8_64 UBUNTU8_64 NETWORK edition, Patch 7.1.4_P1
Check out Pidgin. It is fairly lightweight, can connect to XMPP, and has a systray app as well.
swrightsls,
After digging this thread among others regarding IM Zimbra..., we have clear that IM Server it's removed in ZCS 8, but keeping an IM Client capable to integrate to a external IM Server.
However, there's no way to assure this, cause http://bugzilla.zimbra.com/attachment.cgi?id=23281 it's available.
IMHO, this will be the better approach Zimbra.
Also, there's no reason to not using IM in ZCS 7..

@phoenix thank you for your reply but I must disagree with you. Unfortunately not all Zimbra Admins take active roles in this forum. I personally know two Zimbra Admin, one has network edition version on his small network and second admin that I know uses open source version for their users… Both admin have enabled Internal IM on their Zimbra 6/7. It just very unfortunate that Internal IM won’t exist anymore in next version of Zimbra.
I understand you are a great contributor to Zimbra Forums, we all appreciate that. If it was not for people like you we average day admins were kept in the dark on bugs’ issues and other technical problems. It bothers me to know Zimbra took their time and resources to build social networking module….from where Zimbra find the urge to do that or users were that desperate to ask for these social networking implementations.
We have recently started using Zimbra for our team collaboration, and really enjoy the IM feature of Zimbra 7. However, after having read that the IM server will be going away, we downloaded and installed OpenFire and have been using it with spark messenger and are really enjoying that functionality. I am encouraged to hear that there will be the ability to use other servers inside the Zimbra environment in the next major release even though the server portion will be going away. Thanks for this awesome product, and for those who are very disappointed about the XMPP server portion of Zimbra disappearing, I highly recommend Openfire for your XMPP needs.

Unfortunately Zimbra 8 open source edition does not have internal IM build in. Only Zimbra 8 Network Edition has this new feature which they call it “unified communications” is a Cisco component. Your best bet is Zimbra 7 open edition where you can still enable internal IM via command line. Indeed it was a great feature to have but it was removed from Zimbra 8 release.
