Default How To Troubleshoot Missing E-Mail?

I just had a user report that most of the e-mail in their inbox disappeared. I have no clue where to begin to troubleshoot this. I had them check all of their folders to see if they somehow moved the e-mail into another folder by accident (including trash), but that doesn't seem to be the case.

What are some tips/tricks to troubleshooting an event like this?

Have you tried re-indexing the user mailbox?

I did. Re-indexing completes almost instantaneously and doesn't resolve the problem.

Would anything like this show up in a log somewhere?

Has their quota usage gone down?
If they know the sender/subject of one of the 'missing' messages then see if it comes up in a search (including Trash & Junk)

I had a user who dragged/dropped the entire contents of his Inbox into another folder without realising it.
