do filters work? mine seem to do nothing

Yes this is a know problem. We are working on it and hope to have it fixed in an upcoming release. Thanks for the report.

any time frame? once there are filters and spell check i will be migrating several of my domains to zimbra for testing.

No promises but I can say both are very high on our list. So keep an eye out here and on the blog as we cut new milestone releases.
