    does zimbra not use standard local mailboxes. or are any users defined on the unix system itself not going to receive mail. I set this up on a clean debian machine.

    No, Zimbra doesn't use local mailboxes - I mentioned that earlier. You need to define users in the zimbra admin ui, they then use that system to send and receive mail using the web UI or a mail client - that's where all the groupware and collaboration features are. You can use an external LDAP to authenticate users against if you want.

    well how do I stop the local users from grabbing zimbra mail. I defined the user in the zimbra UI

    also, I removed the user account huhlig from the system. If I send email from zimbra to a "local" user. it bounces saying account unknown.

    If the server is to be used to send and receive mail then the users will have an account on the zimbra server that is user1@yourdomain.com (for example). All they have to do is send a mail to user2@yourdomain.com - if the user is on that server it will get delivered to their mailbox (on the Zimbra server not a local mailbox). The user can connect to Zimbra by using the web UI to view the mail or an imap client, the mail will stay on the server or they can also have a local copy.

    I don't understand what you mean by 'grabbing the mail', do you mean they download it using a pop3 client? If that's the case train them to use imap.

    no. the postfix server if I send mail from the zimbra interface to huhlig@rsng.local is

    Does the domain rsng.local exist in zimbra? As dwill has asked, what happens if you send to huhlig@serverone.rsng.local ?

    Sounds to me like you have your own copy of postfix running on port 25 and you need to shut it down so the zimbra instance of postfix can catch the email.

    If incoming mail lands in /var/spool/mail or tries to look up recipients via /etc/passwd then the wrong MTA is listening on port 25. Zimbra mail lands in /opt/zimbra/store.
