Managing Size of Index?

Is it possible to manage or tune indexing? Since upgrading to 6.0.8 our Index file systems have been growing faster than they used to. It looks like we're going to have to grow those file systems, but before we do I didn't know if there was another way to get space back on the Index file system. Pruning or shrinking or some other method?
