Question Separate email address from LDAP username?

We have a LDAP-integrated Zimbra server where we use a "short form" LDAP account name, as in firstinitiallastname, eg, 'jdoe'. We want to employ email addresses with format firstname.lastname, eg, john.doe@domain.com. No email aliases.

Is there a way to make a 'jdoe' LDAP account employ a 'john.doe@domain.com' email address (with no email alias)...and generalize this approach for all accounts?

Is this a question about Zimbra Desktop (which is the forum you've posted in) or Zimbra Collaboration Suite?

Per Zimbra - Products , this question is for Zimbra Open Source Edition. (Sincere apologies, though I was posting to a product-general forum, not a forum general to the Desktop product.) Can this thread be moved to the appropriate place, or should I re-post?

Why [no email aliases]?
We want to present one and only one email address to our customers and thus minimize confusion.

Consider this scenario: I send email as john.doe@domain.com to a customer, copying coworkers along the way. A coworker responds to email thread but mistakenly (possibly because Zimbra might "force" this through the LDAP-authentication method) uses doe@domain.com instead of john.doe@domain.com. Customer wonders if doe@ is different than john.doe@, potentially concerned the email-thread's distribution list has changed.

Make sense?
