Default Migration from zimbra to zimbra question

I'm currently using 6.0.8 open source on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. We are in the middle of virtualizing our infrastructure and I would like to make a few changes in the process.

I'm currently using standard unix user management and have about 180 active accounts. I'd like to move to Ubuntu 10.04 when its out of Beta, but I'd also like to use Active Directory authentication for my users. Luckily I thought ahead and every user account name in my Zimbra database matches their AD login name.

My question is what is the right approach?? I'm thinking create a new zimbra instance on Ubuntu 10.4, get the AD authentication working, then copy over the data store from the old zimbra? Sounds reasonable, but I want to be sure to not loose any user data.

The answer would partly depend on whether you're moving from a 32bit to 64bit server and whether you already have the hardware.

Follow the instructions here (obviously leave out the NE steps) word for word: Network Edition: Moving from 32-bit to 64-bit Server - Zimbra :: Wiki I'd also suggest you do test migrations in advance to test the steps but it should work first time.

Just want to caution that the wiki document that Phoenix referenced is a bit incomplete / misleading, specifically with regards to self-signed certificates. There is actually an open bug/RFE (46647) to have this document updated. I would recommend looking over the bug and searching the forums for further information. Overall though the steps described in the wiki document do work. I did a physical to virtual / 32-bit to 64-bit migration earlier this year using it as reference.
