Default zmmailbox backup - restore fails if the blob is being untarred and retarred

I am observing an effect with zmailbox and tar and backing up and restoring accounts. When I back up an account with:

/opt/zimbra/bin/zmmailbox -z -m test@mydomain.com getRestURL '//?fmt=tgz' " > /tmp/test.tgz

... and throw that .tgz into reverse with postRestURL, then the restore works as expected. But if I untar the blob and make a new tar from that, and throw that at my Zimbra server, then most of the stuff will not be restored.

The reason for untaring? I'm trying to save backup space with the hardlink feature of rsync. But even if I let rsync completely out of the picture and only untar and retar, then the restore is not successful.

Any ideas why?
