Default Memcached/Proxy Question

I am aware that all proxies can use a single memcache server. If I choose to install memcache on every proxy server, which memcache instance does the proxy host consult for route information? The one that is running locally or all memcache servers in the installation?

I am trying to determine how many proxy servers should have memcache installed. Would obviously like to have more than one memcache server for continuance reasons and am wondering what issues might arise if there is memcache running on each proxy.

You can have one, but if that one fails, you're left without any. I have memcached on all my proxy servers and I have no issues with that..
