external LDAP + GAL with multiple mail attributes

We have an external ldap (openldap) which we use for our GAL sync source. The problem is that our accounts have multiple mail attributes. To make matters worse one is their full email address and the other doesn't have the @domain.com part.

Zimbra happily copies both into the galsync's address book but if the entry that doesn't have the domain is first it doesn't auto complete correctly. Even if it did auto complete correctly we have only allow fully qualified email addresses enabled so it would fail.

I've tried to search for a way to filter out results based on an attribute value but I haven't come up with much. Anyone else run into this? I'm kind of guessing that the Admin who setup our ldap long ago did it in a non-standard way and now its coming back to bite us.
