Default Every night one of the services stops, zimbra stops working.
Hi all,

We have a Zimbra CS6 running at our company but since one week I have the impression something goes wrong overnight. Since then, when I arrive every morning people complain that "the mailserver is down". Luckily I found out pretty quick how to solve the problem. But still, this is just temporary!
Mostly, the webmail is still running, but it is not up to date. I believe you do can read the (older) emails.
So the real problem is that the incoming emails are not processed any more.

When I checked the status there is always one or two services not running any more. This time it was the zmmailboxdctl , other times it is the logger, even mta was down once I checked.
For example this morning:

What I do next is

zmcontrol start
After 10 mins the emails start being sent out to the user's mailboxes.
(mostly randomly, first I receive some emails from around 10am, 2mins later from around 7am etc...)

I have added the file \var\log\messages , I don't know if that is the file needed to do some troubleshooting.

Thanks for helping my out here... This morning the same, although I had the impression no services where stopped (zmcontrol status)

You might try scanning through the /opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log file to see if you can find the root of the problem. I recently had something similar after migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit and forgot to make a small change. The root of my problem was:

Bug 42870 – "Bad file descriptor" SocketException causes system failure every several hours

See if you see any log entries like this:

What platform / how much memory is installed? Also, how many users have you got?

I have searched through the mailbox.log files and indeed found a bunch of those ServiceExeptions.

Today this was the state of the system:

Our system: It is a Debian 5.0 x86 with 3,5GB DDR2 memory installed. We do not have that much users, 15. Diskspace is neither the problem.
Weirdly enough we never had any problems for 7 months.

Do you have anything in the mailbox.log with entries like "Root cause: bad file descriptor"? If you look at the log file and follow the trace that follows each exception, it may help to show the real cause. Looks LDAP related, but I'm not sure the actual cause just yet. If you do see the "Bad file Descriptor" errors, then it looks like the bug I linked to previously. You can follow the advice given in:

And that will probably resolve it.

I searched for this and its variants but I believe it's not the same problem here. The logs go back 8 days.

Try searching just for "Bad file descriptor" case-insensitive.

Instead of searching the log file why don't you look in it and see what other errors are in there?

OK. That seems to rule out the max-open-files issue.

Try finding one of the exception errors in the log and post the entire trace. That may help to identify the problem.
