Default Best OS?

Hi Guys.
I am running in the same soap errors I had before using OpenSUSE 11.2. I understand that OpenSUSE is not supported, but please could you give me advice to which OS will be the best to install my Network Edition onto?

I have a choice of:
1. OpenSUSE
2. CentOS
3. Ubuntu
4. OpenSOLARIS

All the flavours are 64bit. Due to the nature of my business (Non Profit) I have had to reach far and wide for the funds for the NW ED of Zimbra, but would not like to fork out more money for the OS...

If you suggest the best platform to be REDHAT, could I install CentOS 5.4 64bit and so get as close to REDHAT possible?

Thank you for your time
Kind regards

My recommendation would always be CentOS as that's a free rebuild that's binary compatible with RHEL, however, it's also unsupported. Although I'm not a fan of Ubuntu the next choice (for me) would be the Ubuntu LTS build.

There is, of course, no such thing as 'best o/s' as it's really what you're most comfortable with.

Hi phoenix,
Thank you for your very prompt reply.

After reading all your comments and other users comments regarding your vast knowledge I have decided on CentOS 5.4 (64Bit) and will start first thing Monday to install this environment.

I do have one concern and that is the way mail is bing pushed to my current system (UUCP). BUT, the old server is a redhat server (release 6 I think), so I could always use those scripts to initiate the UUCP bits.

Once agian thank you for your quick response.

Kind regards
Aubrey

I'm afaird I don't have any experience using UUCP so can't offer any advice with that.

You probably know all this but I think it bears repeating, make sure you have a valid and correct /etc/hosts file, valid DNS A & MX records in a Split DNS set-up (if necessary) and if you have a Split DNS then your resolv.conf should only point to that DNS server.

If you have any questions about the config of those items then feel free to post again.
