Default Debian 5: DNS Issue: Web Interface & IM

Hello -
My primary domain is working fine sending and receiving email from the web interface and desktop client, but chat is not working.

Additional domains are recieving email and able to send email through smtp authentication via 3rd pary web client, but NOT using the web interface or desktop client.

The error message returned after messages are sent is the following:

This is the mail system at host mail.mydomain.com.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not
be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below.

For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.

If you do so, please include this problem report. You can
delete your own text from the attached returned message.

The mail system

user@non-local-domain.com: Host or domain name not found. Name service error for
name=ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.com type=A: Host found but no data record of
requested type

I have updated /etc/rescolv.conf to point to other dns servers and it seems to have to effect on the issue. My /etc/host has been unmodified other than the entry made my the Zimbra install pointing to the publicly available ip address of the server. There are no firewalls that I aware of.

I believe there is also a DNS issue keeping my IM client from working (I suspect this on a hunch).

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If you are behind a NAT router or firewall you will need a Split DNS (details in that wiki article and all over the forums, if you search), follow those instructions and there's also a section on how to verify the correct working of your DNS.

Thanks Bill.

I switched to google's DNS server (8.8.8.8) last night and *almost* everything was fixed. My /etc/resolv.conf was using several DNS servers, one of which must have been having issues. I'm now only use one, for the moment.

However, I am still seeing some funny business when checking DNS config on the server using dig, per the page you recommended.

I don't believe I'm behind a firewall and setting up Split DNS will possibly fix things, but get a load of this...

- The hostname for the server is mail.mydomain.com
- Both 'dig mx mydomain' and 'dig mydomain any' from the server reveal NO records.
- IM and Email work fine from mydomain.com! :-/
- Email works from other domains, but IM does not.

Here is the dig output:

# dig mydomain.com any
; <<>> DiG 9.6-ESV-R1 <<>> mydomain.com any
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 41675
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

;; QUESTION SECTION:

;; SERVER: 8.8.8.8#53(8.8.8.8)
;; WHEN: Thu Aug 26 10:32:27 2010
;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 30

# dig mx mydomain.com
; <<>> DiG 9.6-ESV-R1 <<>> mx mydomain.com
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 4201
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

If you don't have other suggestions I'll setup Split DNS and hopefully things will be fixed.

I also noticed this morning that I could no longer login as 'admin'. I had to type 'admin@mail.mydomain.com' as the username. I think this has something to do with virtual Hosts or something similar, but I'm not too worried about it at the moment.

Best Regards.

I did also say that you need a Split DNS if you're behind a NAT router, I'm assuming you are on a private LAN IP. If you are on a public IP then you're set-up would be different but your current DNS is still incorrect. You also should have posted the output from the /etc/hosts file.

That's not surprising as you won't have created any DNS records on that server (or have you created the DNS records on another external DNS server)?

If this server is test server then I'd suggest you remove the installation, fix the split DNS set-up then reinstall Zimbra. Before you go ahead, let me know what's in the hosts file and whether you are going to remove Zimbra - I'll need to give you some more instructions before you reinstall.
