Has anyone tried taking advantage of Tomcat's clustering ability in order to achieve some sort of fail-over/redundancy?

My thought is to have a single-name mailserver running across several tomcat cluster nodes. That way, you could have failover of the mailservers w/o running a RHEL cluster. In that case, the mailstore would have to reside on some NAS mount, and the metadata would need to be shared. Is that possible? Wise?
