It could be a permissions problem. Are any of the services running? If they are do an 'su - zimbra' the 'zmcontrol stop', see if there's any other zimbra services running and if there are kill them. Then as root run the zmfixperms.sh and reboot your server.

i ran the zmfixperms.sh from /opt/zimbra/libexec then rebooted the machine
i then stopped the Zimbra services then restarted them to capture log:

What did you do to Zimbra before this problem? Did you make any config changes?

No changes made . . . this is an out-of-the-box install. Should I re-install?

Not quite time to re-install.

Which operating system is this?Does it have SElinux and if it does have you disabled it? Is there also a firewall on this system? If so disable that and try a restart of zimbra, if it fails again try a manual start of just the MTA.

Good news about the re-install!

The OS is Red Hat Ent 4
Code:
Linux zimbra.technorati.com 2.6.9-5.EL #1 Wed Jan 5 19:22:18 EST 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
SELinux has been disabled
Code:
sed -I 's/SELinux=enforcing/SELinux=disabled/'
Firewall
This machine does sit behind a firewall that has been configured to allow all Zimbra ports in and out.

Thumbs up RESOLVED: zimbra won't start

phoenix - thanks for your help on this . . . . I ended up uninstalling the applications; deleted all Zimbra directories; then re-installed application. The server is now up and running.

Glad it's working, an uninstall is the last remedy but seems to fix some odd problems. SElinux is still a pain to have running even on it's 'warn' mode.

I have a multi server installation, so I was wondering if I had to do this on every server or just the mail store server?
