Since Exchange 2010 provides WAN replication natively, Zimbra having to rely on SAN-SAN replication or VMware Fault Tolerance for supported WAN replication puts Zimbra at a severe competitive disadvantage in a number of cases.

In our experience, many mid-sized (e.g. 500-5,000 mailboxes) prospective Zimbra customers do not have a budget for a pair of SANs nor are they going to deploy an enterprise-grade VMware environment for just email/groupware.

So, although Exchange's server hardware requirements and licensing costs exceed Zimbra's, when you add in the cost of VMware and/or a pair of SANs to get WAN replication, Zimbra now becomes the more expensive solution.

Whether WAN replication is best accomplished as originally planned for ZCS 4.5, via log shipping as in the latest RFE or via some other method is a discussion for another day.

Our view however is that having supported WAN replication baked-in natively in Zimbra would greatly improve Zimbra sales in the mid-market.

    All the best,
    Mark

1000% agreed. Same customer feedback in Germany. Until today we were able to avoid direct competition using DRBD WAN setups and VMware FT as a service providing the same SLAs.

It would be great if Zimbra would head in the direction suggested by Marks post. I think we should file an RFE asap and find as many Admins as possible voting for it

    absolutly agreed however

    1. i dont think vmware will be the best solution withtin the next 5 years.
2 there are a oss repication/clustering methods working really relyable so its not so much need of an expensive solsution BUT a real need of know how behind it...

but true zimbra needs a replication systems simply to compete with the features list and to fit in in more infrastructures.

BUT if you Implement it PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE think about a partitial replication domainwide.
means i would be a real great deal to have the posibility to select which domains are replicated on wich replication node

specially for ISPs - reason is obivoise. customer can have a replication node in his office with optimum speed (maybe also in a vpn) and his net wide node at the ISP main host

Just dreaming but this would be awesome

There are already RFEs for this.

Bug 11423 - disaster recovery through server to server sync (beta) 139 votes
    Bug 42231 - HA/DR through Log Shipping 29 votes

And there are a number of roll-your-own solutions that have been discussed on this forum. The problem is that Zimbra needs to pick a method...or two...and preconfigure/package them so that admins just have to enter a few variables, and Zimbra will support paying customers who use the native feature.
