Default Proxy and REST URL's

I'm using Zimbra Proxy, and when I try to access files in my briefcase, it redirects me to the public service URL, and I get a browser popup asking for a username and password.

Is there a way around this, so that the links to the files also get redirected through the proxy service?

As I understand it the public service hostname should be the common hostname/url that everyone logs in with. Its job is to change the links from the mailstore hostnames to something common that everyone has authed to so its doing what its supposed to by changing the links. Usually the public service hostname is a cname for your proxy server.
