    Default Version 3.1.4_GA_518.RHEL4 SaslAuthd

    Hi,

We have been running the free version for quite some time and are about to buy the network professional edition, but I need someone from Zimbra to verify if this is a bug or not prior.

Small company ~25 employees, Secure IMAP and SMTP setup. Not many webmail users, mostly outlook/entourage few thunderbird and evolution. About every 2-3000 email sent, smtp auth quits working - SASL gives the same old PLAIN LOGIN failed messages and I have to restart zimbra and it goes right away.

I could not find a post here on the subject, so thought I would ask.

If it is not a known bug, I will be more than happy to provide logs.

Logs would be great, specifically /var/log/zimbra.log

Also, which OS are you running, and which version of Zimbra?

Also - when it dies, before you restart, can you run
    zmcontrol status

to find out what exactly is dying? Is it sasl, or something else???

Also - prior to restart - find the tomcat PID and kill -3 that pid, then grab the stacktrace out of /opt/zimbra/tomcat/logs/catalina.out - you could have a deadlock in the IMAP server, which is causing auth attempts to fail.

Anything else dying around this time?

OK - to make it short, I do see the error now that I looked into /opt/zimbra/log/zimbra.log and matched the timestamps with /var/log/zimbra rejects:

/var/log/zimbra - first refusal (I left off the TLS handshake since it was successful):

    Aug 15 11:18:52 webmail postfix/smtpd[3532]: TLS connection established from cisteraa2.august.net[206.123.138.2]: TLSv1 with cipher DES-CBC3-SHA (168/168 bits)
Aug 15 11:18:52 webmail postfix/smtpd[3532]: warning: cisteraa2.august.net[206.123.138.2]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed

/opt/zimbra/log/zimbra.log - Catalina error just prior:

2006-08-15 11:17:25,994 FATAL [ImapServer-36] [] system - Fatal error occurred while handling connection
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

    And after a restart:
2006-08-15 11:23:59,551 INFO [main] [] soap - Servlet SoapServlet starting up
2006-08-15 11:23:59,583 INFO [main] [] soap - Adding service AccountService to SoapServlet

Next tie it happens I will get the detailed info for you. Well - hopefully after we purchase it today it won't happen again.

    System specs follow:
Dual Xeon 3.0 - 4GB Ram, plenty disk
    RHEL 4.3

I don't mind bumping the catalina memory up (I didn't modify it originally), but the 607meg it has allocated already seems like it should be plenty - especially since hardly noone uses the web client.

Looks more like it may be a memory leak though - I remember reading a post from KevinH a while back about a memory leak, but thought we were past that release?.. Can't remember. I'll keep an eye on the memory it is currently using:

    884m 487m 13m

    Thanks,

    Greg

Tomcat's crashing because it's running out of RAM - could be related to the IMAP SSL bug, but I doubt it. How much memory does this box have, and how many users?

FWIW, we detect this and handle it much more gracefully in 4.0, which will be out later this month.

Hmmmmmm... I am pretty familiar with Tomcat since all of our apps use it, and in catalina.sh, the thresholds for min/max ram are set... Zimbra is set for 607MBytes.. I have also used the same components that zimbra uses for "under the hood" mail systems. the journaling on top of journaling is very nice, as well as many more features that the zimbra team implements make it worthwhile though.

If it would help, I can run the GUI through a java profiler to provide debugs and any errors that may happen. What I can say is that this problem is real, and is not misconfiguration. In approximately 5-7more days, I can give you the logs you want. The ram usage is growing daily. The box has 4gb of ram and 22 mailboxes...

I am not trying to flame at all, I want zimbra to be successful as I am sure you do, so anything I can do to help - I will. I am going to build a new machine as we have gotten our network edition license - and migrate users over.

    Thanks again,

    Greg
