Calendar color bars

After upgrading from 5.0.17 to 6.0.5 I am now seeing vertical bars in different colors on the left of calendar entries. What do these mean?

They are supposed to indicate the status of the meeting (i.e. did you Accept? Decline?). Personally, I think there should be a preference option to turn these off - meetings in my calendar are all accepted. Ones I decline I delete. Having little bars on every meeting adds a lot of noise to the UI.
