Default ZCS Backup Report: FAIL, (No such file or directory)

Hi there. Every now and again we seem to get a completed backup, but with errors, and it always seems to only be 1 error. This has happened on 2 different accounts, and it last happened sometime last week to say account1@domain.com. Since then account1@domain.com has worked fine and ive had numerous successful backups with no errors.

I had a successful backup on the 26th, 27th, and it failed on the 28th.

The errors always seem to be the same, and an example is shown below:

Server: ourserver.co.uk

Label: full-20100227.213730.551
Type: full
Status: completed (with errors)
Started: Sat, 2010/02/27 21:37:30.551 GMT
Ended: Sun, 2010/02/28 01:50:56.734 GMT
Redo log sequence range: 17427 .. 17427
Number of accounts: 28
Number of errors: 1

at com.zimbra.common.io.AsyncFileCopier$WorkerThread. run(AsyncFileCopier.java:116)

I'm a bit unsure why this happens, and why the file doesnt exist at that time.

Further information: We backup to a mounted drive that isnt /opt/zimbra/backups but this has been fine for ages, and nothing appears to have changed.

Any suggestions please?

sounds like you have a missing blob for a user. This means that the database has an entry for an e-mail that doesn't exist on the disk for one reason or another. You can confirm this by running

zmblobchk -u account2@domain.com

if you have the file in an old backup you should just be able to copy it to that location and be fine, if not you'll need to remove hte reference to the blob from the database and consider it lost

Will this sort itself out or is there a guide in what I can now do?

what version are you running? you should update your profile so that it shows on all your posts.

as of version 6.0.3 i think zmblobchk has a repair mode. I'm still running 5.x so i havn't used this but theres mention on it in the bug report Bug 27958 – blobchk: Add support for 'repair-mode' to the zmblobchk tool

Seems like you'd probably want to run

zmblobchk -m 3 --missing-blob-delete-item -v --no-export start

Updated profile, version is:
Version 5.0.10_GA_2638.UBUNTU6.NETWORK 3 Oct, 2008

Are there any problems in running that command, what exactly would happen, and how come this has started happening for this user account, it was fine a few days ago?

Cheers

you won't be able to run that since repair mode wasn't introduced until after version 6. Besides it sounds like you don't want repair mode since that would just eliminate reference ot the bad blobs essentially removing emails.

If you think the backup like a week ago was fine i would restore that backup to another account, then copy the blobs in question to hte existing account

ok, even more confused now. The account that was failing, seemed to work fine last night, yet it failed last night for a different account:

So just to clarify, this has done this for 3 accounts now, but it seems to sort itself out, why is that? What would happen if we restore from one of these backups considering it completed but with only 1 error?

Thanks for the help.

you might have issues restoring the particular account from that backup, I'm not entirely sure. other accounts should be fine though.

have you run zmblobchk again? does it not show errors for the previous accounts like mailbox3?

I once had this behavior when an upgrade had only partially completed. like it had upgraded the software but the database upgrade scripts hadn't run completely. It was causing very inconsistant results wtih zmblobchk where it would complain about different accounts everytime i ran it. Unfortunately I'm not really sure how to tell if this is your problem. You should probably consider upgrading to hte latest 5.x anyway it may solve your issues.

Any further suggestions, based on the fact I won't be able to repair?

What does that mean above?

And we will be upgrading our hardware and software somewhere around April time, but I still want to be safe with backups until then.

Thanks

You need to first understand the basics of how zimbra's mailboxes are stored.

Actual messages are stored in /opt/zimbra/store organized by mailboxid under the 0 directory (0 for people with only one message store). These are the raw emails often referred to as the blobs.

Information about each blob is stored in a sql database for eahc mailbox. It stores information like size, subject, date sent and date received, and snippets. basically everything you see in your preview pane in zimbra is stored as metadata for hte message in the sql database. so what zmblobchk does is compares what is in the database for a message versus what is on the disk. so these errors mean

Quote:
* MailboxGroup=3, mailbox=3, item=16820: wrong size: expected 50242, was 51277: 16820-14253.msg (no action, unrecoverable)
the size of the e-mail in the database is different than what is on the disk

Quote:
* MailboxGroup=8, mailbox=8, item=208231: file not found: 208231-359922.msg (delete associated metadata)
theres is an entry for an e-mail in the database, but there is no corresponding blob on the mail store. basically you would see this e-mail in your preview pane but when you clicked on it you would get an error b ecause zimbra wouldn't be able to find teh e-mail to display to you

Quote:
* /opt/zimbra/store/0/6/msg/18/75737-219761.msg: no associated metadata (delete blob)
There is a blob on the disk that has no metadata entry in the database. E-mails like this wouldn't even show up in the web interface

Usually this kind of thing may happen when you have a disk failure and some data gets lost or something. like the first zmblobchk you had reported

Quote:
* MailboxGroup=31, mailbox=31, item=155172: file not found: 155172-198057.msg (delete associated metadata)
But I don't see that in the second zmblobchk you posted. Now its unlikely that file would suddenly re-appear.

I would be hesitant to try to manually fix some of this stuff by editing the database or removing blobs because of the inconsistant nature of it. This might be a good time to talk to support
