Default Upgrad Prep questions

I make a backup of my /opt/zimbra folder every night.

Tomorrow night I will attempt to upgrade form 5.0.16 OSE to 5.0.20 OSE. If something doesn't go right. Will I be able to just rm -rf /opt/zimbra then extract my backup in its place, then startup zimbra? In theory?

Also, I have a backup server already in place. However it is on 5.0.20. If for some reason I needed to use that, would my backups of 5.0.16 work? I don't imagine they would, but I figure it doesnt hurt to ask.

Thank you in advance.

Close, but not quite.

You will need to completely uninstall Zimbra (so it removes it from the RPM database).

After you uninstall it, you will re-install ZCS 5.0.16 fresh - you can put in default values for settings. Once the install is done, stop zimbra, put your /opt/zimbra backup in place, and then run the install again to upgrade from 5.0.16 to 5.0.16 (sounds weird) - that will make the new install use the settings from the backup you took.

Thanks so much for the reply. That helps a lot. Never knew about a few of those steps.

The problem with just deleting /opt/zimbra and replacing it with the backup is that the packages installed on the operating system would still show that you were running 5.0.20, so if you ever try to upgrade in the future you will run into a mess of problems. Doing it this way will save you from that headache.
