Default [SOLVED] Upgrade question [5.0.11 to 6.0.4]

I have Zimbra Release 5.0.11_GA_2695.UBUNTU8_64 UBUNTU8_64 FOSS edition and I plan to upgrade to 6.0.4 in December.

My questions are:

1# Is there any vantage to update first to 5.0.20 and then to 6.0.4? Or may I upgrade straight to 6.0.4? Because I read some issues with some users when upgrading from some versions of 5.0 to 6.0

2# Is there any upgrade guide for Zimbra Upgrading?

Thanks

You should always check the Release Notes for any requirements to go to an intermediate version of Zimbra, if there isn't any then you can go from your current version to the latest (whatever version it is at the time) release.

The usual routine is: block mail from coming in to your server; stop Zimbra (for the OSS version); take a backup; while that's running read the release notes in detail; when you've done that run the './install.sh' script to upgrade; when that's done confirm it's up and running OK then let mail mail flow in again. I'd suggest you wait a couple of days for the next update or 6.0.4 if that has specific bug fixes you need.

Page 27 of the 6.0.2 release notes:

Quote:
The upgrade path to 6.0.x is ZCS systems at 5.0.2 or later can upgrade directly to 6.0.x.
If you are running a version earlier than 5.0.2, you must first upgrade to 5.0.2 or later before upgrading to ZCS 6.0.
Important: Upgrades from ZCS 5.0.19 or later 5.0.x releases to ZCS 6.0.0 or 6.0.1 will fail. We recommend customers running 5.0.19 or later 5.0.x releases upgrade to 6.02 or later 6.0.x releases when they choose to move to the 6.0.x series. (Bug 42609)
About that last sentence, one thing to be aware of is that some versions of 5 are "newer" than some versions of 6, so you can't go from one to the other. mmorse has mentioned this in a couple places:

http://www.zimbra.com/forums/migrati...6-0-2-oss.html
http://www.zimbra.com/forums/adminis...6-0-2-a-2.html

Also discussed at Bug 42609 – Upgrade from 5.0.19 to 6.0.0 or 6.0.1 fails - slapadd import failed

In fact the issue also affects upgrades from 5.0.20 to 6.0.2 or 6.0.3 as mmorse notes.

However 6.0.4 will be "newer" than any current GA release of 5, so this particular issue shouldn't affect you.

To summarize and clarify, 5.0.11 to 6.0.4 upgrade, at first hand can be done without a first update?

Correct.

Extra info:
If you have a maintenance window available this month, and are definitely planning to skip 6.0.2/.3 with a wait for 6.0.4 (mid dec), in the meantime I'd upgrade to 5.0.20 for a slew of other fixes. If 6.0.3 (next week) is a 'possible' for you, then I'd do 5.0.19 to keep options open.

Routes:
5.0.21+ > 6.0.4+ if 5.0.21 released first as planned, else 6.0.5+
5.0.20+ > 6.0.4+
5.0.19 & prior > 6.0.2+
5.0.1 & prior > 5.0.19 > 6.0.2+
4.5.6 & prior > 4.5.11 > (LDAP replicas additional step) > 5.0.19 > 6.0.2+

Thanks for the clarification! 5*
