Question Spam and Ham accounts getting very large

Over time our Spam account has grown to over 10 GB, and our Ham account is 113 MB....

Just a question -- Do those accounts have to retain the emails in them to continue to work, or after some point cant the emails be purged --
essentially I understand they are training accounts, but is the presence of the mails in the account what is used to filter by, (thus needing to stay there forever) or is the info "learned" from them somewhere else in zimbra, and the spam and ham accounts can be logged into through zimbra admin panel and "cleaned up"....

I KNOW this is a dangerous thing if I do it wrong.... Thats why I'm asking...

Thanks,
Gabe

Those accounts should be cleaned out by a daily cron job and there should be next to nothing in them. Which version of Zimbra are you running and what in your crontab for the zimbra user?

Default I know I should upgrade....

Still using 3.0.1. On RedHat Enterprise 4.

I know we should upgrade... my bosses theory has been "if it is working,
let it be"

I'll check the crontab and get back to you.

There have been so many changes since the early versions (and 3.0.1 isn't supported anymore) I wouldn't know where to start, show this to your boss and see if you can tempt him: Group calendar software, document sharing, address book sharing: New Features from Zimbra

You need to upgrade to at least 4.5.11. But even with the latest version 6.0.1, you might get the described symptoms thusly...

Bug 41491 – Large message in spam/ham mailbox breaks zmtrainsa - java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

Regardless, emptying the ham/spam mailboxes is safe. No idea if it worked way back in 3.0.1, but with 4.5+ you can run zmmailbox -z -m ham.foo emptyFolder /inbox
