Default Stand by server -hot spare server- ?

    Hello there

is there a way of having a hot spare standby server that will have the same copy as the live server that I can expose in case the live server takes a hit ?
(I don't have a san, just want a case for business continuity ?)

We don't have replication yet so you need a SAN/NAS to use the cluster feature and have a hot-stand by server. If you can add availability this way you could run a secondary MX record to a MTA that is setup to forward/queue to the primary server just in can the machine goes down. Won't give you mail access but at least keep you from bouncing mail.

Is mailstore replication planned? I seem to remember it was specified in the original NE features but the docs now refer to redhat cluster software. It would be really nice to have mailstore replication to allow for warm standby without having to go to the expense, complication (and sometimes unreliability) of full on clustering.

It's still planned but no set date yet...

Also, some folks have successfully set up "poor man's replication."

Primary server does incremental backups every X minutes. Then rsync /opt/zimbra/backup/sessions/<label> to the secondary server and restore.

    This can all be cron'd.

In case of disaster, just update DNS to point to the secondary machine.

Secondary will always be X minutes behind, but than can actually be good. For example if the root cause of the outage on the primary was a massive spam/virus/DOS attack. X minutes ago, the attack may not have started yet, and additional defensive measures can be taken before the secondary is put in production.

    Ari,

I don't suppose you have an example of the mentioned scripts?

The wiki would be the place to start and further discussions have been in the forums (do a quick search).

    Bill,

The mentioned resources seem to have lots of information about cold backups and OSE backups but not syncing hot backups for NE?
