| | | Basically from what I understand it would be impossible to run them both on the same server, I could be wrong here though.
If you want to run it on the same machine your best bet is probably to setup a virtual machine and install it on there (You could do something like copy the 5.0.16 directory over and then run the upgrade on it). If you don't have any VM stuff set up on that server you probably should just use a different computer.
/install.sh -s just installs the software, so if you ran that on your main server it would replace all the 5.0.16 software with the 6.0.1 software, but not do any of the upgrade steps. So if you tried to start the result of that it would be horribly broken... |

| | | ok, so that pretty much told me I need to setup another PC for it...okie dokie....
...but then how would I setup the DNS?
Basically, I'm thinking, setup a new server, mirror 5.0.16 to the new server, run the 6.0.1 upgrade, resolve any and all samba/posix issues....On the 5.0.16 server, the old server, ./install.sh -u, to clean out the zimbra folder, then mirror the fully working 6.0.1 back to the main server....right?
But to make the 6.0.1 on the new server the identical domain mail.domain.com would also have to be setup on it. How would I get both the 5.0.16 and the 6.0.1 to use the same domains? ...and be able to still test 6.0.1?
Should I just not connect the new 6.0.1 server to the network? ...and just plug my test end user PC directly only into this server only? Would that enable me to have the same domain on two different zimbra servers?
LOL...this sounds like a serious test environment... Is zimbra R&D lookin to hire...!?! ROFLOL
...what a guy's got to do to get a zimbra update to work....LOL
Thanks! |

| | | Setup split DNS on the 6.0.1 test server so all of the domain entries point to it of course It will be the only server seeing these results. As for accessing it, you will probably have to type in the IP address directly, rather then accessing it via the domain names, as the domain entries will resolve to the real server on your workstation. That, or you could do what you said and just do a network directly between the 6.0.1 server and your machine, but you would still need to setup split DNS on it for that to work as well. |

| | | okie dokie....
So just use the same domain name, and setup the split DNS...and I should be good to go....

| | | ok, I have a new question related to this test server setup....
When I get everything working on the test server and want to mirror this 6.0.1 test setup back to the production server, how would I mirror JUST the zimbra server/software files, NOT the user/email data...?
Can someone tell me the directory structure?
What/Where are the user and email files?
What/Where are the zimbra server files?
For the mirror I've been just using a straight cp or rsync...depending if it's local or remote.
Thanks. |

| | | I believe the data has been changed between the 5.0.x and 6.0.x branch, I know LDAP has changed majorly, and an entire MySQL database is gone... your safest bet is to get the upgrade procedure working on your test server and then upgrade your production server using the same steps. |
