Default zmcontrol password

I have had Zimbra 5.0.16 / Debian 4.0 running on a VPS successfully for several weeks now. Over the weekend I have been unable to access it by web or Imap. When logged in over ssh and su'd to zimbra user to trouble shoot it keeps asking for a password when I try to stop / start services with zmcontrol. There is not a password set for the zimbra user and the root password doesn't work.

Thanks in advance
