As I understand it, the polling interval setting in the account is different than the polling interval in the data source. I believe the data source polling interval is what tells Zimbra to poll the external mail account while the polling interval for the account is how often the web client polls the server for new mail. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.
In the first thread that I linked to, phoenix linked to an RFE for exposing the external mail polling interval in the UI which was closed with a "WONTFIX" status. Following that trail a bit, there's a link in one of the comments that points to this bug:
Bug 21199 – add ability to set autopolling in admin console which is still open. The RFE is quite old, but still open so I'm not sure if that indicates that it's just not done, or if the issue has been abandoned.
