fetching mail from a main mail server

Hi,

I'm trying to install Zimbra as a local mail server that will fetch mail from the main mail.domain.com server but be on the local LAN. My mail.domain.com server needs SMTP authentication. I have gone through the articles on the wiki and administrator guide. My Mail domain settings look like this:

I authenticate with the local Active Directory server. However, when I try to send mail to an external system I get a sasl authentication failed error. I have created the conf/relay_password file with the user id and password.

Which user/password are you talking about?

The config you pasted above is for user authentication for logins. For Smtp Auth you need to have a seperate auth file and same needs to be specified in main.cf. Have you modified those entries ? Refer to link Outgoing SMTP Authentication - Zimbra :: Wiki
