http proxy intermittent

We have a setup with a pair of mtas running proxy, delivering to a pair of mailbox stores on a private network. Sometimes the webmail proxy properly proxies and everything works. Sometimes it, instead, redirects to the private network name, which obviously doesn't work. I reset the zmprov modifyDomain <domain> zimbraPublicServiceHostname <publicname>, to no avail???
