I booted off a Ubuntu 9.04 Beta LiveCD I had laying around and it seems to be OK there. I've got a tar cvfj running now and transferring it off to a USB drive. Rich King from Support said I should be able to move that to another unit and make it work.
As for exactly what is failing, I'm not sure yet. Once I have the data off I am going to test the drives individually and try the card in another server with the drives also.
Ubuntu 9.04 seems to be solid, so it might be flaky SATA RAID support for the Dell CERC 1.5/6ch cards (rebadged Adaptec 2610SA). It looks like the kernel changed for aacraid devices a few years back, but I also see mention of patches that fixed it. Possibly a newer distro like Ubuntu 8.04 might fix it. CentOS might as well since there was definately a Redhat patch a few years back.
