The clue is in the original question, it allows you to use multiple ports for postfix.

I was concerned that it was required to get 587 working.

These are outbound ports were talking about here. You'll also need that statement for 587 as well.

Well apart from setting that you need to change zimbraSmtpPort. Only changing master.cf file wont help.
