Default Searching documents

Are all document contents indexed? Sometimes I get results from a search word and other times it just sits - no hourglass, no "not found" results, nothing. Some of my documents were created in an earlier version - is that my problem? I'd love to implement the documents feature for our IT Knowledge Base and all of our internal task documentation, but I need to know that people will be able to find the appropriate docs.

Can I issue a line command that will rebuild my document index?

I found the "Reindex Mailbox" button on the admin console, but does this reindex documents as well as mail folders?

Reindexing did NOT fix my document search problems. I also ran zmfixperms but that didn't help either. Any other ideas as to why some searches work and some fail?
(Searches work fine all the time with email contents. Only documents are a problem.)
Thanks.
