That's a good question. We're testing various mail clients including Zimbra Desktop. None of them run their own LDAP service so far as I can tell.

We don't (currently) use LDAP (or any variants) for authentication of workstation logins.

If you can track down that article and post a link it would be helpful both for my future reference and possibly in getting to the bottom of your issue.

Check this out.

So I copy /etc/ldap.conf to /etc/openldap/ldap.conf and all is well.

While I don't need /etc/openldap/ldap.conf for authing users, it does effect /usr/bin/ldapsearch in some way. Funny thing is that when I set up a standard fare OpenLDAP server, I never needed to mess around with /etc/openldap/ldap.conf on my clients but I could be mistaken.

I referenced my ldapsearch path not because you don't know as judging by your posts, you know a lot more then I, but because I wanted readers to understand that ldapsearch means non Zimbra ldapsearch.

Thanks for all your time and patience. I realize no one has to reply to my posts for help. I'm very appreciative.

The Unix article I mentioned is here;

UNIX and Windows Accounts in Zimbra LDAP and Zimbra Admin UI - Zimbra :: Wiki

And if you wants Windows integration, supplement it with this article as I had to use both to get Samba working;

Zimbra & Samba -- error joining machine to Domain

You're welcome, and thanks for the link.

I wasn't aware that ldap.conf affected ldapsearch. I had thought it was only used by slapd. However man ldapsearch and man 5 ldap.conf do suggest they work together.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you've found an answer.
