Default Bulk Forwarding

Hi All,

Is there any command line tool available to "forward" emails of a number of users to some other email id?.

We have a situation to forward more than 500 user's email to some other domains as part of migration. If we have a command line tool to do the same, that will be helpful to us.

thanks in advance

Premod

I'm in the exact same situation. I need to forward about 100-200 mail addresses to their private (and of course external) account.

Is this only possible by
  • Creating a mailbox and forwarding the users mail to the external address
  • or creating a distribution list with only one entry

Is there no way to simply create a forwarding rule / alias?
Or is it possible to modify postfix to look for an alias file?

Do have a look at the zmprov command and what you can do with it:

Code:
zmprov help commands
Try adding a forwarding address to an account and list the account with:

Code:
zmprov ga account@mydomain.com
then have a look at the forwarding address and see what the name of the attribute is. You can dump the required address with zmprov then script the creation (zmprov ma .....) of a forwarding address for those accounts. The alternative would be to do it manually from the Admin UI.

Thanks for the reply.
Well, thats not news to me, since it is clear that the creation of user accounts can be scripted, as well as the forwarding address.

The question is, do I need to create a full user account (and mailbox) just to create an alias.

If so, would you recommend to create an user account or a "distribution list" with one recipient to do the task?

I'm sorry but I don't understand your question. Zimbra currently has the ability to forward mail (check the user preferences in an account) to any account whether external or another internal ZImbra account. Why do you think you'd need an alias or distribution list for that? Are you saying that the 100-200 accounts aren't already on the Zimbra server?

OK, sorry for not being clear.
The mail forwardings are currently in a postfix virtual user table on another server. I want to move this domain to a new server running ZCS.
Of course I could create an account with forwarding for every alias (which is name@internal-domain.tld -> some-private-address@anydomain.tld)

But that just does not feel right because it seems to be some unnecessary overhead to create a mailbox only to forward mail. But I guess if that is the only way to go it's ok. Thanks anyway.
